NRT One-Year Training Program
A future in trucking begins in school. At Career Days, held in several northern communities, NRT personnel encourage students to stay in school, keep a clean license and consider all the opportunities a career as an NRT driver can offer; be it as a driver of one of NRT's fleet of company rigs or as an owner-operator.
Each year, NRT's Safety, Training and Compliance Manager chooses a new group of driver students from the applications he receives from partner communities throughout the north.
He chooses young people with a responsible attitude, an aptitude for learning and listening and an eagerness to respond to the rules of the road and the demands of the job. He looks for people that he feels will maintain the respect they must always have for the handling of hazardous goods.
The trucking industry today certainly needs bright young people. There is a lot to master, including the art of progressive shifting, navigating the city in a unit of up to 72.5 tonne, understanding the paperwork and billing system, knowing each customer's warehouse procedure and being familiar with different chemicals and their safe handling. Students must also learn how to service and maintain their trucks and be able to do minor repairs on the road.
